Thunderkick takes a Danish B2B licence under Denmark's new supplier rules

Denmark only began requiring suppliers to hold their own licence from 2025. Thunderkick's runs to 2029 — and the rule change is the real story.

Thunderkick has a B2B licence from the Danish Gambling Authority, valid from 1 January 2025 and running to 2029. The interesting part is not that the Stockholm studio got one — it is that until 2025 it did not need one.

What was announced

The studio said on 3 December 2024 that Spillemyndigheden had granted it a B2B licence ahead of new rules taking effect at the start of 2025. Chief compliance officer Wan Kim said obtaining it “has been a focus since the Danish Gambling Authority announced the new regulations earlier this year”. No licence number was published and no operators were named beyond a reference to “some of the country's biggest”.

What changed in Denmark

Denmark's original 2012 regime licensed operators. Suppliers sat behind them: an operator was responsible for the games it offered, and the studio supplying those games had no direct relationship with the regulator. Denmark has since moved to licensing suppliers in their own right, which is the direction most mature European markets have taken.

The practical effect is a compliance obligation landing on studios that previously had none in that market, and a hard cut-off: a supplier without a licence when the rules commence cannot legally supply, however long it has been operating there. That is why announcements like this cluster in the months before a commencement date.

It also makes a supplier's Danish position checkable for the first time. Before the change there was nothing to look up.

What our records show

We hold four licences for Thunderkick. Two UK Gambling Commission entries (041752-R-321094-007 and 040165-R-320747-006) are at our highest tier, confirmed on the regulator's own register. The Danish entry and an Ontario iGO record sit a tier lower, taken from published sources rather than checked by us, and neither carries a number in our data.

We record it live in three markets: Ontario, Denmark and the United Kingdom. It is an independent studio founded in 2012 in Stockholm, developing its own slots rather than aggregating anyone else's.

What would move this up a tier. Spillemyndigheden publishes a list of licence holders. A direct entry there, with a number, would take our Danish record to independently verified — see how we verify data.

If you are buying

A five-year licence term means the supplier's Danish position is settled until 2029, which is worth knowing if you are signing a multi-year content deal. For any market that has recently moved to supplier licensing, ask when the licence was granted: one taken before commencement suggests a compliance function that reads regulator notices, which is a cheap and reliable signal.
