BETBY received Brazilian federal certification from Gaming Laboratories International in mid-December 2024 and was operational when the market opened on 1 January 2025. Two weeks between certification and launch is tight, and it was tight for everyone.
What was announced
The Malta sportsbook supplier said on 3 January 2025 that its solution had been certified and was live in Brazil's regulated market. Ilze Ramolina, head of legal, described Brazil as “one of the most dynamic and high-potential markets globally”. No certification number was published and no operators were named.
Brazil's hard start
Most markets phase in. Brazil did not. Law 14.790 set 1 January 2025 as the date the federal regime took effect, and from that day operating without authorisation was unlawful rather than merely unregulated — in a market that had been running at scale, informally, for years.
That produced a compressed queue. Operators needed authorisation, and their suppliers needed certification, all against one date. Certification runs at a test house's pace, and there were more applicants than the labs could process comfortably. Suppliers certified in December were not early; they were on time, and the ones who were not spent the opening weeks unable to trade.
For a sportsbook the pressure is sharper than for a slots supplier. A sportsbook supplier is the operator's core system — if it is not certified, the operator has no product at all, not merely fewer games.
What our records show
We hold one licence for BETBY: a Malta Gaming Authority B2B licence (MGA/B2B/780/2020), at our highest tier because we opened the Authority's register ourselves. We record it live in one market, Brazil.
It was founded in 2018 and supplies a hosted sportsbook covering sports, esports and virtuals, plus Betby.Games and AI-driven tooling.
If you are buying a sportsbook in Brazil
Ask for the certification date and the scope, and check whether it covers the specific modules you need — live betting, virtuals and esports are often certified separately from the core book. A supplier certified for one and not the others is certified, and still cannot give you the product you are buying.
The same applies to the operator side of the relationship. A certified sportsbook still needs the operator it serves to hold its own SPA authorisation, and the two are granted separately. An operator whose supplier is ready but whose own authorisation is not cannot trade either, which is why the opening weeks of the Brazilian market saw certified suppliers sitting idle alongside authorised operators with nothing to run.
