Greentube live in Alberta as the province ends its online monopoly

Novomatic's digital arm went live on the day Alberta opened. The bigger change is what Alberta replaced: a government monopoly, not an empty market.

Greentube went live in Alberta on 20 July 2026, the day the province opened to competition. The detail worth holding on to is not the launch itself but what it replaced: Alberta already had legal online gambling, run by the government as Play Alberta. This was a monopoly ending, not a market being created.

What was announced

The Novomatic-owned supplier said it had secured registration with Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis and was live on day one with titles including Piggy Prizes Wand of Riches 2, Rumble Riches Haulin' Gold, Firecracker Frenzy Money Toad, Silver Lux Big Win Spinner, Starlight Jackpots Captain's Catch and Charming Lady's Boom. It did not name the operators carrying them.

Commercial director David Bolas said going live on opening day “reflects the strong momentum we are seeing in Canada”. The company has been live in Ontario since 2022.

Why replacing a monopoly is different

Most new markets are built out of a grey one: players were already betting somewhere unlicensed, and regulation pulls that activity into view. Alberta is not that. Play Alberta has run legally since 2020, so the province starts with an installed base of players who already had a lawful option and a government operator that continues alongside the private ones.

For a supplier that changes the shape of the opportunity. The question is not whether players will come to a regulated product — some already had one — but whether private operators can offer enough that those players move. Content breadth is what decides that, which is why day-one catalogues are larger here than they usually are at a launch.

What our records show

We hold two licences for Greentube, both confirmed by opening the issuing register ourselves: a Malta Gaming Authority Type 1 licence (MGA/CRP/120/2006) and a UK Gambling Commission remote gambling software licence (041020-R-320549-007). The company's own announcement quotes the same two, which is a small but genuine check — the numbers match.

We record it live in seven markets: Ontario, the United Kingdom, Malta, Italy, Spain, Gibraltar and South Africa. It is Novomatic's digital division, founded in 1998 and based in Vienna, and the land-based parentage shows in the catalogue — several of the titles above are online versions of cabinet games.

Not yet checked by us. The AGLC registration itself carries no number in the announcement and we have not confirmed it on a public list. It is recorded as the company's own statement.

What it means if you are buying

If you are launching in Alberta, a supplier already live in Ontario is a lower-effort integration than one that is not: the certification and reporting work overlaps. If you are not, this tells you mainly that Greentube's compliance function can clear a new North American regulator on schedule, which is worth something and is not the same as knowing how the games perform.
